Back to Web Dev

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

So I’m back to developing web pages and stuff for a bit here.

Today’s for-fun project was: http://t.rscript.org/custom

Works in Opera 9.5, FF3/Gecko, IE7 [and IE6 I think], and Safari/WebKit/KHTML.

I ran into many fun problems, including this IE bug - as well as a Safari bug with handing JavaScript comments.

The color picker is from here: http://johndyer.name/post/2007/09/PhotoShop-like-JavaScript-Color-Picker.aspx

And so on. Glad that’s done, now to go look for a real job.

It’s not even worth it

The ads on RuneScript Tracker have a click ratio of under 0.10%. We’re getting nearly nothing in return for the ads shown there. Out of 15,000 page impressions, we got 15 clicks. That’s terrible.

Talking to other people who run sites, they also are seeing this. Ads just don’t make much money anymore. We’re not even making enough to clear the $100 withdraw limit on google adsense by the end of the month [or even next month's withdraw date at this rate..]. It really sucks.

People just ignore ads, they filter them out mentally. The only way to get people to even look at ads now-a-days is fooling them to think it’s content. That sure isn’t easy without annoying a good number of people.

On the up side, our Project Wonderful ad got around 50 clicks. It’s too bad it only pays you per day the ad is shown. To help things out, I swapped out the 6 ad block on the bottom with one big ad, hopefully that’ll get a few more bidders for the spot.

RuneScript Tracker Released

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

After doing free and fun projects for the past 6+ years, I finally put my talents to use on a for-profit project.

The RuneScript Tracker!

Basicly a site to show experience gains for a player on the game RuneScape.

Includes a custom graphing script which I wrote several months ago. Can do gradients, anti-aliased lines and fonts and more.

A graph

And completely customizable, except I haven’t put up a page to help people with that yet.

Anyway, hopefully from the ads and all I can gain some fun money as well as pay for the server. I’d really like to not have to pick up a cruddy food service job in this small town. Of course me and spling have to decide how to split the money..

Of course, that brings up a whole new topic since there’s 4 “owners” of the RuneScript Project and numerious “staff”.. :\ I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it..
