Reconsider the B00x

Monday, October 24th, 2005

I see why Windows server OSes have such bad reps, Windows 2000 Server just plain sucks. IIS 5 crashes with php all the time. Fortunately putting it in isolated mode helps a bit, but then the resources go up and well.. everything slows down. Windows 2000 Server was all I had for the server OS, I refuse to download anything illegally [So no Windows 2003], and I still have yet to figure out how to simply install linux. [Tried Gentoo, the OS wouldn't boot, Tried another, couldn't get XWindow [or WindowX?] to load on my display adapter..] Right now it’s being held together like a fridge with duct-tape. I’ll need to stay like that for a bit, just too busy with highschool to bother. Hopefully I can get Apache in there and fix a whole lot of the HTTP Server problems, and give myself some well-needed Apache experience.

And yes I’m starting to miss the B00x [which for new readers, B00x is the name of my old Windows Server 2003 Web Edition back at Sagonet]. Maybe I can put some money in again and get a new server again, or better yet, find a host that does Virtual PC/VMWare servers. That was awsome, fastest script times I’ve ever seen on my oldest host.

I’ve seen more and more Windows VPS/VDS packages turn out, I’m wanting to look into those a bit more.

Bah, I gotta get working on homework… Hm.. after I check out some packages at WebHostingTalk. :)

MIB00x! Transphin!

Sunday, October 16th, 2005

I’d like to introduce our new server, MIB00x. It’s the less-then-average replacement server for NDC, Micksam7.com, RuneScript, and the like. Lets, break it down with a comparison:

Good:
-Triple Hard Drives: [1] Main, [2] Hot-Backup, [3] Removable Backup
-Infinate-User terminal services
-It’s here in my laundry room so I can service it on the spot
-It’s free [sorta]

Bad:
-2.0 GHz -> 600 MHz
-1 Gig RAM -> 256 MB Ram
-10 Mbps -> 256 Kbps
-80 Gig HD -> 18 Gig HD [main only]
-Win 2003 Server -> Win 2000 Server

Generally it’s a decrease, but it’s all that’s needed really. Pages and images will load slower on NDC and the like, but hopefully it won’t be too much of a impact. I’ll still be using my bandwidth-saving techqiues to attempt to keep pages loading fast and etc.

Also, the switch only takes a few hours, which is only for keeping a accurate image of the database. After that everything is pretty much fine. I’ll be transfering tonight pretty late, so hopefully everything will be fine.

Tech stuff, it was built out of old PC parts, runs in my laundry room over our connection. It’s cool too.

Transphin! That’s not a new roleplaying character [though a transparent dolphin might be interesting to play], it’s my new Desktop I’m building.

I just placed an order for a new power supply and memory. All that’s needed now is a CPU and it’ll be up and running! The fans in the thing will be replaced later on however. :)

And that’s it. I gotta go look at Bab’s stuff and then get the server switching.

Wednesday, October 5th, 2005

I’m going to be shutting down our server, the B00x, all who donated for it will be refunded what was left after the paypal merch fee [bleh].

Thanks the B00x, you’ve served us all. May the B00×2 come someday.

Move date on the 14th of this month [Oct].
